What IOD is
Artwork you can put on furniture
Iron Orchid Designs makes decorative products for painted furniture and home decor — original artwork you apply directly to a surface. A plain painted dresser becomes a piece with a story on it, without needing to be able to draw.
The blue dresser above is a good example: paint does the transformation, and a single IOD floral transfer does the rest. That’s a beginner-achievable result, not an advanced one.

Four ways to add detail
Each line does something different. Which one is right depends entirely on the piece you’re working on — and that’s a good question to bring to the studio.
Decor Transfers™
Rub-on artwork that lifts off a backing sheet and onto your surface. They work on wood, metal, glass, canvas and fabric, and they’re the fastest route from “painted” to “finished”.
The technique is all in the positioning and the burnishing — get those right and the design looks painted on. It’s very learnable, and the most common thing people come in wanting to try.

Decor Moulds™
Flexible silicone moulds used to cast raised, three-dimensional appliques — scrollwork, florals, figures, trim. You cast them, let them set, then glue and paint them onto the piece.
Useful for adding architectural detail to a plain flat-fronted drawer, or replacing decorative trim that broke off decades ago.

Decor Stamps™
Deeply etched rubber stamps for layering pattern, texture and lettering onto a painted surface. Because you control the ink and the pressure, the same stamp can read as crisp and graphic or soft and aged.
Pairs naturally with IOD’s Decor Ink range, and it’s the most forgiving place to start if you want to experiment on a small piece first.

Paint Inlays™
A newer technique, and a genuinely clever one. Artisanal paint is embedded into your surface and the paper carrier is removed with water, leaving behind a design that is actually paint — soft, matte, and looking like it has always been part of the piece.
The finish is beautifully aged and forgiving of imperfection, which makes it a favourite for anything that should look old rather than new.

In class
The first transfer is the hard one
Nearly everyone tears their first transfer, or lands it slightly crooked and can’t lift it again. It’s the one part of the process where having someone beside you genuinely saves a piece.
Classes cover positioning, burnishing, working around curves and hardware, sealing over the top, and what to do when it goes wrong — because occasionally it still does.

Designs retire
IOD releases seasonally and retires designs. If there’s one you love, it’s worth asking sooner rather than later.
